Visions of a Peaceful Future

Before we start, I want to give a big s/o to my amazing and super talented hermana Indigo (@indig0Art) for inviting me to collaborate in this Austin mural project for the Black Lives Matter movement. This marks our first mural collaboration and we couldn’t have been more satisfied with the result.

And of course, this couldn’t have happened without the Monse (@monchachita) and Ala (@pottedplants), the incredible people who put this together<3

Intro

A historic change is happening.
Believe it, take your time on it, embrace it, act upon it, grow it with all your might.
Remember that peace is abundant in the knowledge that this is all a crucial part of the collective process of change and healing from the blindness of our past. And as the youth is choosing to learn and evolve, time is on our side.

This mural honors the historic significance and present impact of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Key Visual Elements

BLM fist sign: We positioned this symbol closest to our portrait’s head to represent its presence and relevancy in the conversations and change that we’re living today.
Portrait: For the selection of the portrait, our intention was to get a reference with both a hopeful and strong stance and with no particular name (and gender) linked to their face.
Mountains: We decided to paint the background mountains with different skin tones to acknowledge and represent the participation of the wider community in the movement. We’re all in this together.
Ray from forehead: This light coming out from the head of our portrait represents the vision of justice & peace that this movement is creating. This light can also be represented as wisdom, education, growth, greater awareness, and evolution of our consciousness.
Peace Sign: As artists, our message always boils down to something that -adds- to the conversation. That said, with this mural it was only natural for us to continue speaking a language of peace, as we are aware that that’s the driving force of every conversation of justice, inclusion, and justice.

The reason why we decided to take on this project:

We wanted to amplify our contribution to the movement through our most authentic way.
